Hello ladies and gentlemen, my name is Philip J. Sherman and I am looking for a job as a Statesman. What is a Statesman you ask? A statesman is a politician who does not compromise on their principles and is well versed in the art of government and politics. A statesman is also one whose public and private conduct is guided by a bedrock set of principles that will not be compromised for personal or political gain. (Center For Christian Statesmen)
A statesman I am, as I have enjoyed watching our state legislature four out of the last five years, have studied political science at Central Missouri State University, and have been involved in numerous political organizations. Therefore, I would like to be your State Representative here, in District 118, but in order to be your State Representative I will need your vote, after all you, the people, are the actual government of our Republic. But when I become your State Representative I¡¦m going to want to know what you the people of the government believe to be wrong with your State government. Therefore, next year starting January 2nd, if you live in District 118, I will be coming to your door to talk with you about what problems you see in your state government.
Our Government is a republican form of government of the people, by the people, and for the people as Abraham Lincoln once said.
Now three bills that I will introduce in the state legislature after I become your representative.
1) A bill that would mandate that every school district in the state of Missouri, teach both the evolution theory and the intelligent design theory. Thereby teaching both sides of the science creation issue. After all, teaching both sides of the issue and truly educating our children is what learning, which we call education, is all about.
2) A bill that would mandate that no bill shall die just because it didn¡¦t come up for a vote before the main body of the legislature because of limitations of time. This bill would demand that each bill introduced to the Missouri General Assembly exhaust the process due a bill until it has either died by a vote or passed the legislature. This would enable many good bills to be finally truly agreed to and passed.
3) A constitutional amendment that extends the yearly life of the legislative session to the end of August and reschedules the work week for the legislators to be Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Currently the legislature is in session from January to the middle of May with the work week starting on Monday at 4 o¡¦clock in the afternoon and going through Thursday with each day ending at 6 p.m. This is what is currently mandated by the Missouri state constitution and does not give the legislators enough time to effectively go through all the bills that are introduced before them each year. The legislature meets each year for approximately just 70 days, while getting paid approximately 30 grand for their work. If you ask me this really should be a year long job as the legislature has no small task in setting policy for the roughly 6 million people that live in the state of Missouri. You deserve more from your state legislature.
And now my platform of issues: Education, Transportation, the size of the State Budget, the size of the State Statutes, and the length of the session of the State Legislature.
ƒ¯ Education: Education is supposed to be the number #1 priority of our State Government and I intend to make it so. We need to look at the 49 other State Governments, see which state is doing the best job, and try to do the same thing their doing with their schools, in our education system.
ƒ¯ Transportation: Our roads are currently the 47th worst in the Union of these 50 states that make up this great country. This is not acceptable! We need to develop a road plan in which all of the state roads are replaced every 15 or 20 years while repairing these same roads when they develop cracks and other things in the interim.
ƒ¯ The size of the State Budget: Our State Budget is currently approximately $19 Billion dollars and has grown by about $10 Billion in the last 15 years, while approximately $12 Billion of that is from the Federal Government we still need to drastically reduce how our State Government spends your money as we need to stop wasting your tax dollars.
ƒ¯ The size of the State Statutes: We currently have 471 chapters and more than 9320 pages of State Statutes. If we took just one line from each page we could literally reduce the statutes by hundreds of pages while getting rid of countless, useless or unenforced statutes.
ƒ¯ The length of the session of the State Legislature, which I already talked about.
ƒ¯ And Finally Voting: Your Vote is very important. It is essential to our republic that you do your part and vote. If you choose to not vote you will be going against the wishes of our founding fathers, who fought against taxation without representation and for your religious freedoms. Please vote for who you feel would do the better job as your State Representative and whatever you do stop making excuses and make sure you go and vote on both Election Days next year, August 8th and November 7th. After all I'd rather have you vote for my opposition, than to not vote at all.
I am a republican, but before that I am an unashamed Christian that will not be pushed around.

James Madison says, that ¡§a republic, by which I mean a government in which the scheme of representation takes place ¡K¡¨ (Federalist 10). Madison also speaks of an ¡§advantage which a republic has over a democracy in controlling the effects of faction.¡¨
Bottom line, the book, One Nation Under God, explains the difference between a democracy and a republic best when it says, ¡§to clarify what our founders meant when they established a republic and not a democracy, Madison, in Federalist #14, pointed out the difference. It is that in a democracy the people meet and exercise the government in person; in a republic they assemble and administer it by their representatives and agents. A democracy, consequently, must be confined to a small spot. A republic may be extended over a large region.¡¨
Madison went on to argue in Federalist #10 ¡§that a republic is to be preferred over a democracy because, through elected officials, the government can more effectively deal with deep-seated disagreement of opinions. (One Nation Under God)
Secondly, we are a government of the people. This is telling us that the people make up the government. In other words, when people tend to think of their government as just being their elected officials and a bunch of agencies, their wrong. Their only thinking of the infrastructure, which has been created to house the public services that service the people, the government.
Thirdly, we are a government by the people. This shows that your elected officials aren¡¦t just your elected officials, but that their also the government themselves as the people elect representation from within the people or from within the government, to serve them as their elected officials.
Fourth and lastly, we are a government for the people. This is showing us that our elected representation, our elected officials; and the different agencies are there to implement what should be done for the people. Now, this does not mean that everyone is always going to agree on what should be done, but the infrastructure of the government has been charged with finding out what the right thing is to do in each situation or what the majority believe should be done, not the minority.
